you can also get side rails that fit under the mattress. if you child moves to their own bed later you could use it again.

Like HotI we taught ds2 how to get off the bed backwards from the minute he could crawl...especially after Ds1 fell off the bed a few times eep!
Also we put cushions around like a barrier and he used to call out before getting off!

We have a side car cot that acts as a barrier, and then bed up against a wall...and yes it's hard to get in and out of. So the only problem area is the bottom of the bed, because ds could crawl off...I'm very vigilant about going to him as soon as I hear a sound, and the next step is to teach him to get off safely. Dd fell off once and then always climbed off safely and would just come crawling or walking out when she woke up...very cute!
